The Mardale Inn has reopened!

Introduction

The villages of Bampton, Bampton Grange, Burnbanks, Butterwick, Knipe and Rosgill shelter under the beautiful Knipe Scar on the north eastern edge of the Lake District.

 

While our quiet Cumbrian Valley is endowed with stunning landscape, a church and a shop, it used to lack an essential component of a thriving English community - a pub.

Our Pubs' Past

Historically the Valley has supported two pubs, the 'Crown and Mitre Inn' at Bampton Grange and 'The Mardale Inn' in Bampton.

 

'The Mardale' sadly closed in 2018. The 'Crown and Mitre' changed hands in 2021. The new owner has stated it will not reopen as a pub to non-residents.

In early 2022, we raised £400,000 to 'Save a Pub for the Valley' buying 'The Mardale' as a community owned pub for the long term benefit of residents and our visitors.

You may know this delightful Valley from local connections, as a stop on Wainwright's Coast to Coast, as a base to explore The Far Eastern Fells, or somewhere to retrace the steps of Withnail & I's Cumbrian adventures. 

 

Join us in transforming 'The Mardale' to become a thriving community hub. With your help, we can enable many future generations to enjoy this key element of the Valley’s rural heritage.

Since the first public meeting in July 2021, we have researched many other rural community pubs and developed a realistic business plan for community led ownership of our pub.

​

We have now secured the building's future by raising £400,000 in the Share Offer. However to realise our full ambitions for the community, we are seeking grant funding and donations of over £200,000.
